Description
Đại Nam (大南), Nguyễn Phúc Hồng Nhậm (阮 福 洪 任) of the House of Nguyễn Phúc, reigning as Tự Đức (嗣 德), the fourth Emperor of the Nguyễn Empire 1847-1883 AD, Silver ‘Prosperity & Longevity’ Four Tien (15.09g, 30.5mm), ND (1848-1883), Imperial Mint, Phú Xuân (富春). Obverse: Central square hole within raised central square, four traditional Chinese characters displayed cruciform read top bottom right left, “嗣德通寶”, transliterated as “Tự Đức Thông Bảo”, all within raised border. Reverse: Central square hole within raised central square, four traditional Chinese characters displayed cruciform read clockwise, “使 富 民 壽”, transliterated as “Sử Phú Dân Thọ”, all within raised border. Sch-351; KM-448. Certified and graded by PCGS as Almost Uncirculated 50. An enchanting example that we feel is harshly graded as AU50, well struck devices and toned.
The obverse legend is stated in full as “嗣德通寶”, with a Sino-Vietnamese transliteration of “Tự Đức Thông Bảo”, with an English translation of “Universal Currency of Emperor Tự Đức”. The reverse legend is stated in full as “使 富 民 壽”, with a Sino-Vietnamese transliteration of “Sử Phú Dân Thọ”, with an English translation of “Make the people wealthy and live long”.
