Description
Carolingian Empire, County of Poitou, Silver Denier (1.11g, 21mm), ‘Immobilized’ Type of Melle mint, struck in the name of King Charles II ‘le Chauvre’ (‘the Bald’) of the Carolingian Dynasty, circa 900-950 AD or later. Obverse: Short cross pattée central, inner lined border and legend beginning with cross pattée surrounds, “CARLVƧ REX R”. Reverse: Pellet central between mint name across two lines, “METΛLO”. Depyrot-629. A nice example of the type with clear devices all over, the obverse notably sharp, and with a nice grey patina, virtually Extremely Fine for type.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Carolus, rēx Francōrum”, with an English translation of “Charles, King of the Franks”.
