Obverse: Draped and cuirassed bust of King Charles III facing to the right, date below, legend surrounds, “CAROL· III· D·G· HISP· ET IND· R·”. Reverse: Royal Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Spain (1761-1788), mintmark crowned “M” and assayer’s initial “M” below, legend surrounds, “·IN· UTROQ· FELIX· ·AUSPICE· DEO·”. KM-418a.1. A most handsome 4 Escudo struck in the last year of Charles III’s life, interesting as such, evenly worn and somewhat lustrous upon each rotation, good Very Fine, reverse a touch better.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Carolus tertius, Deī Grātiā, Hispāniae et Indiae rēx”, with an English translation of “Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies”. The reverse Latin legend reads “in utrōque fēlīx auspice Deō”, with an English translation of “under the auspices of God there is happiness on both sides”.
