Description
Old Swiss Confederacy, the Canton of Basel, Silver Quarter Thaler (6.41g, 28mm), 1740, Basel city mint. Obverse: Coat of Arms of Basel (supported by the city’s heraldic animal, the Basilisk), legend surrounds, “DOMINE· CONSERVA· NOS· IN· PACE·”. Reverse: City view of Basel along the Rhine River from the south-east looking north-west, of note, the Basel Münster on the left, “BASILEA” to field above, date above overflowing cornucopia left and vine branch right above “H” (Johann Jakob Handmann) in exergue, series of 8 Shields of Arms surround above. KM-142. A charming city scene and very popular and collectible as such, lightly toned with a pleasing cabinet grey, typical slight contact marks, Very Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Domine cōnservā nōs in pace”, with an English translation of “O Lord, preserve us in peace”.
