Obverse: Coat of Arms of the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, inner border and legend surrounds, “FRIDERIC· ULRIC· D:G: DUX· BRUNSVIC: ET· L:”. Reverse: ‘Wild man’ stands facing forward, holding uprooted tree aloft in right hand and resting left on hip, groundline below with flower blooming to right, inner lined and beaded border and legend surrounds, “DEO· ET· PATRIÆ· ANNO· 1617·”. KM-52.1; Davenport-6303. Handsomely toned with a deep cabinet grey, this imposing rendition of the quite popular ‘wildman’ thaler wholly attractive in hand, a superior example, good Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Frederick Ulrich, Deī Grātiā, Dux Brūnsvīcēnsis et Lūnebērgēnsis”, with an English translation of “Frederick Ulrich, by the Grace of God, Duke of Brunswick and Luneburg”. The Reverse Latin legend reads “deō et patriae, anno mīlle sescentī septendecim”, with an English translation of “God and Country, year one thousand six hundred and seventeen”.
