Description
Anglo-Gallic, Edward I ‘Longshanks’, as Duke of Aquitane and King of England 1272-1307 AD, Silver Denier au léopard (0.96g, 17.50mm), Bordeaux mint 1291-1294 AD. Obverse: “AGL” horizontal central, leopard passant guardant above, “Є” below, inner border and legend with initial mark cross pattée surrounds, “EDWARDVS REX”. Reverse: Short cross pattée central, “Є” in first quarter, inner beaded border and legend with initial mark cross pattée surrounds, “DVX AQIT BVRD”. Elias-18 var. Slightly ragged flan, quite complete in strike with great preservation of detail, a popular type, good Very Fine, somewhat scarce in grade.
The Obverse Latin legend is stated in full as “Edwardus Rex”, with an English translation of “King Edward”. The Reverse Latin legend continues from the obverse and reads “Dux Aquītāniae, Burdigala”, with an English translation of “Duke of Aquitaine, Bordeaux”.
