Order of Malta, the Knights Hospitaller, Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, as Magister Magnus – the 68th Grand Master 1741-1773 AD, Gold 10 Scudi (7.89g, 23mm) dated 1763. Obverse: Crowned, ornate oval shield of arms of Manuel Pinto da Fonseca as Grand Master of the Order of Saint John, legend around, “F· EMMANVEL PINTO M· M· H· S· S· 1763”. Reverse: John the Baptist stands facing right holding banner, lamb stands to right below, legend around, “NON SVRREXIT· MAIOR”, denomination “S.X” in exergue. KM-272. A very choice example with an attractive underlying hue of red toning; seldom seen for sale and even lesser seen without typical weakness in strike over the date. The rim is undamaged and showcases the attractive rope pattern, another point less often seen due to this type frequently being used in jewellery. About Extremely Fine and scarce.
