United States of America, Colonial, Æ ‘Voce Populi’ Half Penny, 1760, P below bust. Obverse: Laureate head facing to the right, legend surrounds, “VOCE POPULI”. Reverse: Hibernia seated facing to the left, draped and holding sceptre in left hand and olive sprig in right, Harp of Ireland resting to right, date in exergue, legend surrounds, “HIBERNIA”. USA Red Book, p. 51. A scarce early colonial issue and appears to be the scarcer of the three obverse dies, although crude the design is clear, details Fine.
Struck in 1760, the Voce Populi series were prepared by Roche of King Street, Dublin, who at the time was employed for manufacturing buttons for the Army.
