Description
Australia, New South Wales, WWII Hay Internment Camp, Æ Five Shillings Token (8.63g, 28mm), ND (1943), R. Arendeen & Sons Pty Ltd mint, Malvern. Obverse: Central hole within wreath of eucalyptus, “INTERNMENT CAMPS” surrounds. Reverse: Holed as obverse, denomination surrounds. Mintage 34,643 – 745 of which remain. Certified and graded by PCGS as Mint State 64 Brown. One of the finest known examples, awash with a desirable degree of mint lustre and with a perfectly centred punched hole, a dubious ‘BN’ designation despite this. $5500
Two Melbourne firms manufactured the tokens: Arendsen & Sons made five shillings, two shillings and one penny pieces; while KG Luke & Co produced the one shilling and three pence tokens that completed the series. Other than the pennies, which were struck in brass (with a few rare copper or bronze trial or specimen strikes), the tokens were struck in copper (Andrew Crellin).
