England, King Charles I Memorial Medal in Bronze (51mm), issued under King Charles II, Tower mint, London, engraved by James and Norbert Roettier. Obverse: Cuirassed and draped Bust of King Charles I facing to the right, his armour modest, legend surrounds, “CAROL· D· G· M· B· F· ET· H· REX· &· GLOR·MEM·” . Reverse: Hand from the heavens holding a celestial crown above a landscape with sheep feeding unattended by a shepherd, legend surrounds, “VIRTUT EX· ME· FORTUNAM· EX· ALIJS·” . Eimer-162a. Despite the minor rim flaw, the offered piece is bold and attractive, a nice dark chocolate brown with underyling brilliance, details near Extremely Fine.
The Roettier Charles I Memorial Medals were struck in bronze, gilt bronze and silver at a sale price in the London Gazette of 1695 of 5 shillings, 10 shillings and 25 shillings respectively. It was designed in memorial Charles I as ordered by his son and successor, King Charles II, after the restoration of the Monarchy, likely circa 1670-1680 AD.
The Obverse Latin legend reads with an English translation of “Charles, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland and of glorious memory”. The Reverse Latin legend reads with an English translation of “Learn Virtues from me, Luck from Others”.
