Description
Australia, New South Wales, WWII Hay Internment Camp, Æ Two Shillings Token, ND (1943), R. Arendeen & Sons Pty Ltd mint, Malvern. Obverse: Central hole within wreath of eucalyptus, “INTERNMENT CAMPS” surrounds. Reverse: Holed as obverse, denomination surrounds. Mintage 91,720 – 7,296 of which remain. Traces of lustre, a nice example of the Hay internment camp florin, near Mint State.
Two Melbourne firms manufactured the tokens: Arendsen & Sons made five shillings, two shillings and one penny pieces; while KG Luke & Co produced the one shilling and three pence tokens that completed the series. Other than the pennies, which were struck in brass (with a few rare copper or bronze trial or specimen strikes), the tokens were struck in copper (Andrew Crellin).
