Mughal Empire, Shah Jahan I of the House of Babur, the Fifth Mughal Emperor 1628-1658 AD, Gold Mohur (10.96g, 23mm), Hijri year XXXX, regnal year 2 (19th January 1629 – 18th January 1630 AD), Ilāhī month of Azar “آذر” (Sagittarius), Surat mint 23rd November – 21st December 1629 AD. Obverse: Royal Titulature of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, transliterated as “Bādshāh Ghāzī Muḥammad Shāh Jahān Shahābu-’ddin Ṣāhib-i Qirān-i Thānī”. Reverse: The Kalima Shahada in top two lines, transliterated as “Lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāh wa Muhammadun rasūlu Allāh”, mint, regnal year and month of Azar written in bottom two lines, transliterated as “Zarb Surat sana 2 Ilāhī, mah Azar”. A superb gem example with blazing surfaces and sharp devices, a very noteworthy example of the illustrious Shah Jahan Year 2 Mohurs of Surat mint found in the hoard along the riverbank near the city of Akola. Equal finest graded by PCGS at the time and second finest in NGC, a key coin for any numismatic collection.
The obverse legend is transliterated as above and has an English translation of “Emperor and Conqueror of Infidels (non-Muslims), Muhammad Shah Jahan, Star of the Faith, [second] [ثَانِي] Lord of the Auspicious Conjunction [Venus and Jupiter]”. The reverse legend is transliterated as above and has an English translation of “There is no other god but Allah, and Muhammad is the last messenger of Allah, struck in Surat in year 2 of Ilahi calendar, month of Azar”
