British East India Company, the Bengal Presidency, Silver Rupee (11.56g, 26mm), ND, ‘frozen’ regnal year 45, ‘Furrukhabad’, Calcutta mint circa 1833-1835 AD, struck in the name of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. Obverse: Legend in Persian, naming the Mughal Emperor and Hijri year, “sikka zad bar haft kishwar sāya fazl ilāh hāmī dīn Muhammad shah ‘ālam bādshāh 1202”, Reverse: As obverse, naming ‘Murshidabad’ and the regnal year, “zarb farruckābād sanah 45 julūs maimanat mānūs”, Edge: Plain. Stevens-9.22. Awash with a notably dazzling array of rainbow toning, particularly on the reverse, very attractive as such, Extremely Fine.
The obverse Persian legend translates in English as “Defender of the religion of Muhammad, Shah ‘Alam Emperor, Shadow of the divine favour, put his stamp on the seven climes”. The reverse Persian legend translates in English as “Struck at Furrukhabad in the 45th year of his reign of tranquil prosperity”.
