Description
James II of the House of Stuart, King of England 1685-1688 AD, Coronation Medal in Silver (15.66g, 34mm), 1685, by J. Roettiers. Obverse: Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of King James II facing to the right, engraver’s initial “R” (Roettiers) below, legend surrounds, “IACOBVS· II· D·G· ANG· SCO· FR· ET· HI· REX”. Reverse: The Manus Dei emerges from heavenly clouds holding Saint Edward’s Crown above laurel wreath placed upon cushion below, coronation date in exergue, “IN· AVGVRAT· 23· AP· 1685”, legend surrounds, “A· MILITARI· AD· REGIAM·”. Eimer-273; MI-605/5. Silver Mintage of 800. Light contact marks each side and a few minor hairlines, not as noticeable under the bold toning and lustrousness upon rotation, a nice example, Extremely Fine, reverse near Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Iācōbus secundus, Deī grātiā, Angliae, Scōtiae, Franciae et Hiberniae Rēx”, with an English translation of “James the second, by the grace of God, King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland”. The reverse Latin legend reads “ā mīlitārī ad rēgiam”, with an English meaning of “from of the military to the kingship”. The exergue is inscribed with the coronation date, in this case written as “inaugurated”, reading unabridged as “inaugurat 23 Aprīlis 1685”.
