Description
George V of the House of Windsor, King of the United Kingdom 1910-1936 AD, Silver Proof Half Crown (14.11g, 32mm), 1911. Obverse: Bare head of King George V facing to the left, engraver’s initials ‘B.M.’ (Edgar Bertram Mackennal) on truncation in relief, legend surrounds, “GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX”. Reverse: Royal Shield of Arms of the United Kingdom (1837-1952) surmounted by Tudor Crown, buckled garter bearing the motto “HONI SOIT. QVI MAL Y PENSE.” and beaded border surrounds, date and denomination surrounds below, legend surrounds above, “FID: DEF: IND: IMP:”. Spink-4011; Bull-3710; ESC-758. Proof Mintage of 6000. Certified and graded by PCGS as Proof 64.
The Latin legend is the Royal titulature of King George V, beginning on the obverse and finishing on the reverse, reading unabridged as “Geōrgius Quīntus, Deī Grātiā, Britanniārum Omnium Rēx, Fideī Dēfēnsor, Indiae Imperātor”, with an English translation of “George the Fifth, by the Grace of God, King of all the British People, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India”. The reverse inscription on the shield garter is the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter and is stated in full in Middle French / Anglo-Norman as “honi soit qui mal y pense”, with an English meaning of “shame on anyone who thinks evil of it”.
