Description
Charles I of the House of Stuart, King of England 1625-1649 AD, Silver Half Crown (14.68g, 34mm), Group IV, Type 4, terminal mark ‘Star’ (1640-1641), Royal mint, London under the authority of the King. Obverse: Fourth figure of King Charles I on horseback advancing left, crowned and armoured and holding sword aloft in right hand and the reins in left, billowing scarf flows behind from shoulder, inner beaded border and legend surrounds, “·CAROLVS· D:G: MAG: BRI: FRA· ET· HIB: REX”. Reverse: Iberian-shaped Shield of Arms of the House of Stuart within ornate frame, inner beaded border and legend surrounds, “·CHRISTO · AUSPICE · REGNO ·”. North-2214; S-2779. A little glossy in appearance typical soft strike over horseman, near Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Carolus, Deī grātiā, Magnae Britanniae, Franciae et Hiberniae rēx”, with an English translation of “Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland”. The reverse Latin legend is stated in full as “chrīstō auspice rēgnō”, with an English translation of “I rule with the patronage of Christ”.
