Description
Charles I of the House of Stuart, King of England 1625-1649 AD, Silver Ninepence (4.31g, 32x27mm), 1646, Royalist Newark, Siege Money struck in the name of King Charles I. Obverse: Tudor Crown central, King’s Royal Cypher “C R” (“Carolus Rēx”) each side, mark of value “IX” below. Reverse: Legend in two lines, “OBS: NEWARK” above date. North-2641; S-3144. Appears very neatly plugged at top, impeccably repaired and very unnoticeable, struck a little unevenly with portions of flatness but clear key devices such as date and value, a nice example, Very Fine for type.
The reverse Latin inscription reads unabridged as “obsidium Newark”, with an English meaning of “Siege of Newark”.
