Description
Kingdom of England, Henry II of the House of Angevin/Plantagenet, King of England 1154-1189 AD, Silver Penny (1.48g, 20mm), Cross and Crosslets (Tealby) type, Class B1, Canterbury mint circa 1161-1165 AD, moneyer Wiulf. Obverse: Crowned bust of King Henry II facing forward, wearing armour and mantle and holding cross pattée-tipped sceptre aloft in right hand, no hair visible (North Fig. 3), legend beginning with initial mark cross pattée surrounds, “hЄNRI REX ΛNGL”. Reverse: Small cross potent central, smaller cross potent in each angle, inner beaded border and legend surrounds, “[WIVL]F: ON: CΛ[NTO]”. North-953/1 var (obv. legend as Class A); Spink-1338. Remarkably well struck with distinct class B portrait and full obverse legend, the reverse central cross and crosslets clear with enough legend to easily attribute moneyer and mint, a very superior example, Very Fine or better for issue.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Hēnrīcus, rēx Angliae”, with an English translation of “Henry, King of England”. The reverse legend reads “Wulf on Canto”, this had an English meaning of “[Mint Magistrate] Wulf of/in Canterbury”.
