Description
Celtic Britannia, the ‘Belgae’ people, Gold Stater (5.92g, 18mm), British B (Chute type), circa 65-58 BC. Obverse: Devolved head of Apollo consisting of wreath, cloak and crescents. Reverse: Devolved horse facing to the left, with body of crescents and disjointed, linear limbs and rectangular, half-voided head, array of pellets above, pellet within circle to upper right, crab below body. ABC-746; Van Arsdell-1205; Spink-22. Although struck quite well with present detail in high relief, the strike was uneven with the lower devices flat, few hairline scratches to obverse and the reverse die rusty in points, otherwise a decent example of the Chute type, Very Fine / good Very Fine.
