Description
Commonwealth of England, the Interregnum of 1649-1660 AD, Silver Sixpence (2.89g, 27mm), dated 1651, Sun mintmark, struck at the Tower mint, London. Obverse: Kite Shield bearing the Cross of Saint George within wreath of laurel to right and palm branch to left, legend around, “· THE · COMMONWEALTH · OF · ENGLAND ·”. Reverse: Two Kite shields bearing the Cross of Saint George on the left and the Harp of Ireland on the right, denomination “VI” above, all within inner beaded border, legend around, “GOD · WITH · US · 1651 ·”. Spink-3219. Minor shortcomings of this coin can be overlooked by the quite bold striking of the obverse, with clear detail through the legend and the Irish harp. Some double striking through the legend on the obverse and weakness over the denomination, otherwise a problem free example on a nice round flan. Near Extremely Fine / Good Very Fine.
