Description
Decimus Clodius Septimius Albinus (Clodius Albinus), Roman Emperor during the ‘Year of the Five Emperors’, as Caesar under Septimius Severus 193-196 AD, Silver Denarius (2.73g, 17mm), Rome mint 193-195 AD. Obverse: Bare head of Clodius Albinus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “D CLOD SEPT ALBIN CAES”. Reverse: Minerva stands left, wearing military attire, holding olive branch aloft in right hand and resting left on grounded shield, spear resting in her left arm, legend surrounds, “MINER PA[CIF COS II]”. RIC-7a. With a silver-grey patina and a noteworthy, bold portrait, a very nice example of archetypical style as Caesar, good Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Decimus Clōdius Septimius Albīnus Caesar”, stating his name in full following the adoption of the name Septimius into his nomenclature as well as the title of Caesar from Septimius Severus. The reverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Minerva pācifera, Cōnsulāritās secundum”, with an English translation of “Minerva the peace-bringing/peaceful, honoured with the office of Consul for a second time”.
