Description
Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty 54-68 AD, Silver Denarius (3.15g, 17mm), Rome mint 64-65 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Nero facing to the right, legend surrounds, “NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS”. Reverse: Jupiter enthroned to the left, bare chested and with drapery flowing from his waist onto crossed legs, holding long sceptre in left hand and thunderbolt in right, ground-line below, legend surrounds, “IVP[PITER CVS]TOS”. RIC-53; RSC-119. Struck a touch off-centre each side although with basically full naming on obverse, the portrait quite admirable and typically veristic for Nero’s numismatic issues, a nice example for the type, Very Fine, reverse near Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Nerō Caesar Augustus”, stating a shortened version of the emperor’s regnal name. The reverse Latin legend reads “Iuppiter cūstos”, translated in English as “Jupiter the protector”.
