Description
Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty 54-68 AD, Silver Hemi-drachm (1.70g, 15mm), provincial coinage of Caesarea (Eusebia) mint, Cappodocia 54-68 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Nero facing to the right, legend surrounds, “NERO CLAVD· DIVI CLA[VD F CAESA]R AVG GERMANI”. Reverse: Nike standing facing to the right, draped and resting right foot on globe, holding stylus and shield set on raised knee. RPC I-3646; RIC-618; Sydenham, Caesarea-83. A nice example with a charming youthful bust of Nero, the legend a little weak and the reverse struck a touch off centre, otherwise a solid Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Nerō Claudius, divi Claudius fīlius, Caesar Augustus Germānicus”, with an English translation of “Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, son of the Divine Claudius”.
