Description
Flavius Claudius Julianus ‘apostata’, as Western Caesar of the Constantinian Dynasty under Constantius II 355-360 AD, Silver Siliqua (1.97g, 18mm), Quinquennalia issue, Arles mint 355-360 AD. Obverse: Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Julian II facing to the right, legend surrounds, “DN IVLIANVS NOB CAES”. Reverse: Julian II’s Quinquennalia vows in four lines within laurel wreath, tied below with ribbon, mintmark “TCON” below. RSC-172a; RIC VIII-264. A few light obverse marks, easily overlooked and not very noticeable when held in hand, awash with lovely, deep grey toning with splashes of blue-steel, well centred each side, good Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “dominus noster, Iūliānus nōbilissimus Caesar”, with an English translation of “Our Lord, Julian, the most noble Caesar”. Within the reverse laurel wreath reads “vōtīs quīnquennālia, multīs decennālia”, with an English translation of “vows/prayers for the fifth year of reign anniversary, more for the (future) tenth year of reign anniversary”.
