Description
Servius Sulpicius Galba, Roman Emperor 8th June 68 AD – 15th January 69 AD and the first of the Year of the Four Emperors, Silver Denarius (3.45g, 17mm), Rome mint 68-69 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Galba facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP SER GΛLBA CΛESΛR ΛVG”. Reverse: Livia Drusilla stands left, draped in stola and holding patera aloft in right hand and vertical sceptre in left, legend surrounds, “DIVΛ ΛVGVSTΛ”. RIC-186; RSC-55l Sear-719. A very collectible Galba denarius in modest grade, offering quite a choice obverse, evenly worn and grey toned, the reverse off centre and weak to the right margin, details near Very Fine, reverse good Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Servius Galba Caesar Augustus”, naming the emperor’s full regnal name. The reverse Latin legend reads “diva Augusta”, with an English translation of “the deified or divine Augusta” – this refers to Livia Drusilla, who in 42 AD under Gaius was named Diva Augusta after he deification was complete.
