Description
Caesar Augustus, Roman Emperor from 27BC – 14 AD, Æ As (12.25g, 25mm), Provincial Coinage of Nemausus mint, Gallia Narbōnēnsis circa 10 BC – 10 AD. Obverse: Back to back Heads of Marcus Vipsānius Agrippa, laureate with wreath terminating in a Rostral crown and facing to the left, and Augustus, laureate with oak wreath and facing to the right, “IMP” above, “DIVI F” below. Reverse: Crocodile positioned facing to the right chained to a palm tree in the background, wreath with long ties above, “COL NEM” in field. RPC I-524; RIC I-158. A few corrosion holes and some adjustment marks, otherwise with bold and imposing portraiture, particularly of Marcus Vipsānius Agrippa, good Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin wording reads “Imperator Dīvī Fīlius”, with an English translation of “Imperator, son of the Divine”. The Reverse Latin wording reads “Colōnia Nemausus”, with an English translation of “Colony of Nemausus [of Gallia Narbōnēnsis]”.
