Description
Flavius Tiberius Constantinus of the Justinian Dynasty, Byzantine Emperor from 578-582 AD, Gold Tremissis (1.48g, 17mm), Constantinople mint. Obverse: Pearl-diademed and cuirassed bust of Tiberius II Constantine facing to the right, legend surrounds, “∂m COSTANTINVS P P ΛI”. Reverse: Cross Potent at centre, mintmark “CONOB” below, legend surrounds, “VICTOR tIbЄRI ΛЧG”. Sear-425; DOC-7; MIB II-9. An exceptional example of a tremissis of Tiberius II; perfectly centred on a nice round flan and near fully struck – weak only over ‘T’ of ‘VICTOR’ – and certainly one of the finest known. Extremely Fine or better.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Dominus Noster, Cōnstantīnus, Perpetuus Augustus”, with an English translation of “Our Lord, Constantine, the perpetual Augustus”. The Reverse Latin legend reads “Victōria Tiberius, Augustus”, with an English translation of “Victory of Tiberius, Augustus”.
