Description
Marcus Cocceius Nerva, Roman Emperor and Founder of the Nerva-Antonine Dynasty 96-98 AD, Silver Denarius (2.60g, 17mm), Rome mint 97 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Nerva facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP NERVΛ CΛES ΛVG PM TR P COS III PP”. Reverse: Libertas stands facing to the left, draped in stola and holding pileus aloft in right hand and staff in left, legend surrounds, “LIBERTΛS PVBLICΛ”. RIC-19; RSC-113. Nicely toned and a lovely veristic portrait of Nerva, small flan crack forming and reverse weakly struck, good Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Nerva Caesar Augustus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribūnīciā Potestās, Pater Patriae”, with an English translation of “Imperator Nerva Caesar Augustus, chief high priest of the College of Pontiffs, invested with Tribunician power, Father of the Nation”. The reverse Latin legend reads “lībertās pūblicae”, with an English translation of “Liberty of the people/public”.
