Description
Titus Flavius Domitianus, as Caesar of the Flavian Dynasty under his brother Titus 79-81 AD, Silver Denarius (3.48g, 18mm), Rome mint 80 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Domitian facing to the right, legend surrounds, “CAESAR DIVI F DOMITIANVS COS VII”. Reverse: Garlanded and lit altar with horns, legend surrounds, “PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS”. RIC-266 (Titus); RSC-397a; Sear-2676. Some wear over central high points, nicely toned with a deep and original cabinet grey, the portrait rather veristic with Domitian portrayed in a slightly more youthful style, a nice piece, good Very Fine, reverse a little less so.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Caesar dīvī fīlius Domitiānus, Cōnsulāritās septimum”, with an English translation of “Caesar Domitianus, Son of the Divine, honoured with the office of Consul for a seventh term”. The reverse Latin legend reads “prī̆nceps iuventūtis”, with an English translation of “first/leader of the youth”.
