Description
Macedonia, Roman Protectorate, Silver Tetradrachm (16.55g, 32mm, Reduced Attic Standard), Amphipolis mint of the First Meris circa 167-149 BC. Obverse: Diademed and draped bust of Artemis facing to the right, quiver full of arrows and bow over her left shoulder, inner beaded border surrounds, all at the centre of a Macedonian round shield ornamented with stars within crescents around the periphery. Reverse: Horizontal club central aimed to the right, flanked by “ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΩΝ” above and “ΠΡΩΤΗΣ” below, “AP” monogram above, oak wreath surrunds, upright thunderbolt to outer left field. Minor wave to flan, otherwise choicely centred and lightly toned, the reverse impressive in hand, a numismatic series that has seemingly matured and gathered far more interest in recent times with comparable examples reliably making 700-1000 CHF, near Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
