Macedonian Empire, Alexander III ‘the Great’ of the Argead Dynasty, King of Macedon 336-323 BC, Silver Drachm (4.27g, 16mm, Attic Standard), lifetime issue of Sardis mint circa 332-323 BC, under the authority of Menander as governor of Lydia. Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus seated on backless throne facing to the left, drapery flows around his waist onto crossed legs, holding eagle in outstretched right hand and long sceptre in left, ‘EEY’ monogram to lower left, rose beneath throne, “AΛEΞANΔPO[Y]” downward to the right. Price-2553. Struck on a nice, compact flan and choicely centred on the obverse, the reverse only minorly off flan, a noteworthy lifetime issue, near Extremely Fine.
