Description
Calabria, Tarentum, Silver Stater of Three Drachms (7.90g, 20mm, Achaean standard), circa 334-330 BC, magistrates “Dai-“ and “Phi-“. Obverse: Hoplite mounted atop horse which rears to the right, naked and wielding with a dory (spear) held aloft in right hand and aspis (shield) with secondary spears in left, magistrates name “ΔAI” to field below. Reverse: Taras seated atop dolphin which swims to the left, naked and wielding spear aloft in his right hand and shield, which bears a Hippocampus, in his left, magistrate’s name “ΦI” to left field, shell to field below. Vlasto-595; SNG ANS-990. A most handsome and visually appealing piece, the obverse figure choicely centred and highlighted with a nice display of toning, the reverse minorly off-centre, details good Very Fine, obverse a bit better.
