Description
Lucania, Metapontum, Silver Nomos of 3 Drachms (8.00g, 20mm, Achean Standard), circa 330-290 BC. Obverse: Head of Demeter facing to the left, laureate with grain ears and wearing triple pendent earring and pearl necklace. Reverse: Ear of barley central with leaf flowing to the left, control mark of a Griphon facing right in left field above “ΛV”, “METΛ” to right. HN Italy-1589; SNG ANS-491; Johnson class C, 15. A charming example with quite an attractive control mark on the reverse, nice surfaces and struck well centred; an historically apt type for the agriculturally affluent city state of Metapontum, featuring barley and Demeter, the Olympian goddess of the harvest and agriculture, details Very Fine or better.
