Description
Thessaly, Larissa, Period of Macedonian Domination, Silver Half Stater or Drachm (6.06g, 20mm, Aeginetan Standard), circa 344-321 BC. Obverse: Head of the Nymph Larissa facing three-quarter to the left, wearing plain necklace and earring in right ear, her hair confined by an ampyx and flowing loosely, all within dotted border. Reverse: Thessalian horse oriented to the right grazing, left forefoot raised and back legs bent, small plant between legs, exergual-ground line below, “ΛAΡIΣ” above, “AIΩN” below. HGC 4-454; BMC Thessaly (1883) p.30, 61; SNG München-74. A most charming and choice piece, despite the rusty obverse die which is quite often seen, the offered example displays a masterful Thessalian horse grazing and interestingly a scarcer die with the plant between its legs, collectible as such, particularly with how the Larissa drachms have matured in recent times, Very Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
