Description
Mysia, Cyzicus, Electrum Stater (16.03g, 16mm, Phocaean Standard), circa 500-450 BC. Obverse: Forepart of a winged lioness advancing to the left, right front paw outstretched forward, Tunny fish to the right oriented upwards. Reverse: Quadripartite incuse square of a mill-sail design. Greenwell-117; Von-Fritze-96; SNG-France-237. Although with a clear flan crack as a consequence of striking, the offered piece is a better obverse type and rich in eye appeal, the desirability further bolstered by the well centred striking and the flan of moderately aurum in colour electrum, details Very Fine
A moderately higher grade example without a flan crack was sold by Classical Numismatic Group for the equivalent of approx. AU$11,350.00 – the offered piece with a flan crack, in our opinion, is very affordably priced.
