Description
Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty 54-68 AD, Gold Aureus (7.22g, 18mm), Rome mint 64-65 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Nero facing to the right, legend surrounds, “NERO CΛESΛR ΛVGVSTVS”. Reverse: Jupiter enthroned facing to the left, bare chested and with drapery flowing from his waist onto crossed legs, holding long sceptre in left hand and thunderbolt in right, ground-line below, legend surrounds, “IVPPITER CVSTOS”. An attractive gold aureus of Nero, although typically worn over high points the portrait is quite bold and the reverse features Jupiter, the king of the Gods, a collectible piece, near Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Nerō Caesar Augustus”, stating a shortened version of the emperor’s regnal name. The Reverse Latin legend reads “Iuppiter cūstos”, with an English translation of “Jupiter the protector”.
