Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan, period between Tenpō (天保) and Kōka (弘化) Eras, under the reigns of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyoshi to Iesada, and Emperor Ninkō to Kōmei, Gold “Tenpō” Koban (小判) of One Ryō (11.17g, 60x31mm), Edo mint 1837-1858 AD. Obverse: Fan shaped Kiri crest at top and bottom, denomination in stylized Kanji “壱両” within frame above, mint official’s name in stylized Kanji “光次” (Mitsutsugu) within frame below. Reverse: Butter-fly like signature central within circular frame, several stamps above and below, “保” (for Tenpō 天保) to top right, mint official’s name “さ東”to bottom left. JNDA-09-11; KM C-22B. Sold with Japanese Numismatic Dealer’s Association ‘Guaranty of Genuineness’ booklet and wooden box, numbering this Koban 62497. Light chop (?) mark to central reverse, and a few very minor typical marks, details Extremely Fine.
