Queen’s South Africa medal, type III, clasps “CAPE COLONY”, “ORANGE FREE STATE”, “TRANSVAAL”, “SOUTH AFRICA 1901”, & “SOUTH AFRICA 1902”, impressed “1486 TPR: R. HORNBY. N.S. WALES M.R.”.
A standard 5 clasp Queen’s South Africa medal to the 3rd New South Wales Mounted Rifles, lacking in specific service details which is often the case, medal seen some wear and the suspender a little loose, Very Fine.
Richard Johnson Hornby, a citizen of Sydney, attested for the New South Wales (2nd M.D.) Military Forces at Sydney for service in the Anglo-Boer War, enlisting as Trooper 1486 of ‘D’ Squadron of the Third New South Wales Mount Rifles. The ‘D’ Squadron embarked aboard transport ship ‘Maplemore’ on the 15th March 1901 and arrived at Port Elizabeth on the 12th April.

The 3rd N.S.W. M.R. entrained for Cape Town on the 28th April 1902, and Hornby embarked aboard the transport ship ‘Norfolk’ and later discharged on the 5th August 1902.
