Description
Dutch Republic, United East India Company (VOC), Silver Ten Stuivers (5.20g, 28mm), 1791, Middelburg mint, Province of Zeeland. Obverse: Shield of Arms of the Dutch Republic (comprising a rampant Lion left, crowned, armed, and langued, holding sword in dexter paw and bundle of seven arrows, representing the seven united provinces, in sinister paw) surmounted by the States Crown of the Dutch Republic, central above the United East India Company “VOC” monogram framed within decorative cartouche, date above, denomination “X ST.” to field either side, legend surrounds, “MON: ARG: ORD: FŒD: BELG: ZEL:”. Reverse: The Dutch Maiden (‘Nederlandse Maagd’) stands beside an ornamental pillar, head turned slightly right, wearing classical, heavily plumed helmet and draped in flowing Roman-style robes, holding grounded spear in right hand which is surmounted by the Cap of Liberty (‘Vrijheidshoed’) and resting her left arm on the Holy Bible which rests upon the pillar, mark of value “X” in exergue, legend surrounds, “HAC NITIMUR HANC TVEMUR”. KM-156. Certified and graded by PCGS as Almost Uncirculated 53. Nicely toned and attractive in hand, a nice VOC issue.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Monēta argentea ōrdinum foederātum belgicārum Zelandiae”, with an English meaning of “Silver money of the united Provinces of the Netherlands, of Zeeland”. The reverse Latin legend reads “hāc nītimur hanc tuēmur”, with an English meaning of “on her we lean, her we protect”.
