Hawaii, Island-State of the United States of America, King Kalākaua I (1874-1891), Silver Dollar (26.64g, 38mm), 1883, San Francisco mint. Obverse: Bare head of King Kalākaua I facing to the right, date below, legend surrounds, “KALAKAUA I KING OF HAWAII”. Reverse: Coat of Arms of Hawaii, denomination “1 D” to field each side and in Hawaiian below, Hawaiian legend surrounds, “UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO”. KM-7. Light contact marks and a little porous, deeply toned otherwise and a nice type example of the well-liked Hawaiian dollar, better in hand, Very Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
The reverse Hawaiian legend is stated in full and reads “Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono”, with an English translation of “the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness”.
