Description
British East India Company, Settlement of Bencoolen on Sumatra, time of King George III (1760-1820 AD), Æ Proof Two Keping “Error Value” Mule (24mm planchet), struck with a 3 Keping reverse die, dually dated Hijri Year ١٢١٣ (1213) and 1798 AD, Soho mint, England, issued for use in Fort Marlborough, Bencoolen. Obverse: United East India Company heart-shaped merchant balemark divided into quadrants containing initials “V E I C”, surmounted by a stylized numeral 4 loop, date below. Reverse: Denomination written in Jawi script “كفڠ تيݢ” surmounted by Arabic numeral “۳”, Hijri year “١٢١٣” below. KM-261 (KM-259.2 for true 3 Keping). Certified and graded by PCGS as Proof 62 Brown (incorrectly labelled 3 Keping). With a rather distinct patination far more interesting than standard brown designations, a lovely example.
