First Mexican Empire, Agustín I of the House of Iturbide, Emperor of Mexico 1822-1823 AD, Silver Eight Reales (26.91g, 39mm), 1822 Mo JM, Mexico City mint. Obverse: Bare-headed bust of Emperor Agustín facing to the right, date and mintmark below, legend surrounds, “·AUGUST· ·DEI· PROV·”. Reverse: Eagle perched upon cactus, crowned and with wings spread, legend surrounds ending with denomination and Assayer’s initials, “·MEX· I· IMPERATOR· CONSTITUT·”. KM-304. Certified and graded by NGC as Almost Uncirculated 58. An exceptional post-Spanish Empire Eight Reales of the first Mexican Empire, awash with a dull steel grey, original patina and striking eye appeal in hand, and of note no adjustment marks or other major visual impairments.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Augustīnus, deī prōvidentia”, with an English translation of “Agustín, by the Providence of God”. The reverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Mē̆xicī prīmus imperātor cōnstitūtiō”, with an English translation of “the first Constitutional Emperor of Mexico”.
A similar example graded AU58 sold for USD2400 (approx AU$3600), whilst an MS62 example sold for USD4200 (approx AU$6300).
