Description
Victoria of the House of Hanover, Queen of the United Kingdom 1837-1901 AD, Diamond Jubilee Medal in bronze (72.36g, 56mm), 1897, by George William de Saulles. Obverse: Crowned and veiled bust of Queen Victoria facing to the left, wearing pearl earring and 13 pearl necklace, Order of the Garter star at breast, designer’s initials ‘T.B.’ (Thomas Brook) in relief on truncation, legend surrounds, “VICTORIA ANNVM REGNI SEXAGESIMVM FELICITER CLAVDIT XX IVN· MDCCCXCVII·”. Reverse: Young bare head of Queen Victoria facing to the left, her hair double filleted and collected in an updo knot, olive branch with ribbon tied to end and coronation date below, legend in field either side, “LONGI-TVDO DIERVM IN DEXTERA EIVS ET IN SINISTRA GLORIA”. Eimer-1817a; BHM-3506. Some minor toning spots otherwise bold and attractive, near Mint State if not so, housed within original Royal Mint case of issue.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Victōria annum sexāgēsimum fēlīciter claudit, 20 Iūnius, 1897”, with an English translation of “Victoria, 60th year happily completed, 20th June, 1897”. The Reverse Latin legend reads “Longitūdō diērum in dextera eius et in sinistrā gloria”, with an English translation of “Length of days in her right hand, and in the left-hand side glory/honour”.
