Description
Henry VIII of the House of Tudor, King of England 1509-1547 AD, Silver Groat of Four Pence (2.58g, 25mm), Second Coinage 1526-1544 AD, mintmark Lis, Laker Bust D, Lombardic lettering. Obverse: Crowned and cuirassed Bust of King Henry VIII facing to the right, portrayed with squarer features and “Roman” style nose, beaded border and legend surrounds, “ҺЄꞂRICⳋ VIIIⳋ DⳋGⳋ RE. ΛGL Z FRΛꞂCЄ”. Reverse: Flat-topped Shield of Arms of the House of Tudor over long Cross fourchée, inner beaded border and legend surrounds, “P0SVI DЄV’ ΛDIVTORЄ’ ᙏЄV”. Spink-2337E. An attractive piece in hand, offering quite a reasonable portait of the famous Tudor sovereign as well as quite embossed legends each side, details near Very Fine to Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Henrīcus Octāvus, Deī Grātiā, Rex Angliae et Franciae”, with an English translation of “Henry the Eighth, by the Grace of God, King of England and France”. The Reverse Latin legend reads “Posuī Deum Adiūtōrem Meum”, with an English translation of “I ordain God as my helper”.
