Description
Imperatorial Rome, the Pompeians, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus minor, Roman Politician and General and the son of Pompey ‘the Great’, Silver Denarius (3.68g, 19mm), Corduba mint Summer 46 – Spring 45 BC, struck in the name of Marcus Poblicius, Legatus Pro Praetore. Obverse: Head of Roma facing to the right, wearing crested helmet (in the style of Bellona), legend surrounds counter-clockwise, “M· POBLICI· LEG· PRO PR”. Reverse: Hispania stands on the left, draped in stola and holding two spears in left hand and shield strapped to her back, receiving palm frond from Pompeian soldier standing before her on prow of galley, wearing full military attire and armed with sword, legend surrounds counter-clockwise, “CN· MAGNVS· IMP”. Appears cleaned in the past although in no way abrasive or damaging and small obverse bankers mark, otherwise lightly toned and exceptionally well centred for the type with all devices present, a nice example and better in hand, good Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Mārcus Poblicius, Lēgātus prō praetōre”. The reverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Gnaeus magnus, Imperātor”.
