Description
Roman Empire, Titus Caesar Vespasiānus (Titus), Roman Emperor of the Flavian Dynasty, as Augustus 79-81 AD, Silver Denarius (3.48g, 17.5mm), Rome mint 80 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Titus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG PM”. Reverse: Pulvīnar (ritual throne) of Ceres, heavily draped and topped with ‘diadem-shape’ frame adorned with corn ears and central palmette, legend surrounds, “TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII PP”. RIC-122; RSC-313; Sear-2514. Evenly worn and archetypically Flavian in its style, a nice example with splashes of tone, good Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
The Latin legend spanning across both obverse and reverse reads unabridged as “Imperātor Titus Caesar Vespasiānus Augustus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribūnīciā Potestas nōnum, Imperātor decimum quīntum, cōnsul octāvum, Pater Patriae”, with an English translation of “Imperator Titus Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, Chief High Priest of the College of Pontiffs, invested with Tribunician Power for the ninth time, honoured with the title of Imperator for the fifteenth time, Consul for an eighth term, Father of the Nation”.
