Description
Marcus Opellius Macrinus, Roman Emperor from Apr. 217 – Jun. 218 AD, Silver Denarius (3.11g, 20mm), Rome mint Mar. – Jun. 218 AD. Obverse: Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Macrinus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP C M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG”. Reverse: Aequitas stands facing to the left, draped and holding scales aloft in right hand and resting cornucopia in left arm, legend surrounds, “AEQVITAS AVG”. RIC-53; RSC-2; Sear-7329. An exceptional rendition of Macrinus, choicely struck and with a portrait of fine and faithful style, deeply toned with a gunmetal grey supplemented with underlying idyllic blue hues, a very superior piece, Extremely Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Imperator Caesar Marcus Opellius Sevērus Macrīnus Augustus”, naming the majority of Macrinus’ regnal name. The Reverse Latin legend reads “Aequitās Augustī”, with an English translation of “Fairness of the Augustus”.
