Description
Lucius Aelius Caesar, as Caesar of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty and Imperial heir to Hadrian, Silver Denarius (3.18g, 17.50mm), Rome mint 137 AD. Obverse: Bare head of Aelius facing to the right, legend surrounds, “L AELIVS CAESAR”. Reverse: Felicitas stands facing to the left, draped and holding caduceus aloft in right hand and resting cornucopia in left arm, legend surrounds, “TR POT COS II”. RIC-430a; RSC-50; Sear-3973. A very pleasing example of Aelius, quite choicely struck and with a lovely portrait, Very Fine to good Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Lūcius Aelius Caesar”, naming the Caesar’s regnal name in full as the Imperial Heir to Hadrian. The Reverse Latin legend reads “Tribūnīciā Potestās prīmum, cōnsulāritās secundum”, with an English translation of “Invested with Tribunician power for the first time, honoured with the office of Consul for a second term”.
