Description
Marcus Antonius Gordianus, as the sixth Emperor from the ‘year of the six emperors’ 238-244 AD, Silver Antoninianus (4.31g, 22mm), Rome mint 242 AD. Obverse: Radiate-crowned, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG”. Reverse: Gordian III in military attire advancing right, holding spear in right hand and globe aloft in left, legend surrounds, “PM TR P IIII COS II PP”. Sear-8646; RIC-91; RSC-253. The reverse a touch off centre and the flan a touch misshapen, easily overlooked when viewing the bold and choice obverse, sharply struck and archetypically Gordian III, Extremely Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
