Description
Kōnstantinos X Doukas (Constantine X), Byzantine Emperor of the Doukid Dynasty 1059-1067 AD, Gold Histamenon Nomisma (4.37g, 24mm, scyphate), Constantinople mint 1059-1067 AD. Obverse: Christ Pantokrator enthroned forward, wearing crossed nimbus crown, pallium and colobium and holding Book of Gospels in left hand, legend beginning with cross surrounds, “IhS XIS RЄX RЄςNANTIҺM”. Reverse: Constantine X stands facing forward on suppedion, wearing crown and loros and holding labarum in right hand and globus cruciger in left, legend beginning with cross surrounds, “KѠN RAC Λ O ΔOVKAC”. Doc-1a; Sear-1847. Very well struck, the legends a little blundered, a nice example, near Extremely Fine, reverse better.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Iēsūs Chrīstus, rēx rēgnantium”, with an English translation of “Jesus Christ, King of Ruling”. The reverse legend is a mixture of Latin and Ancient Greek letters, and although blundered, reads unabridged as “Κωνσταντῖνος Δούκας” and transliterated as “Kōnstantinos Doukas”.
